“Allowing an accused killer to reside in government supportive housing as a so-called ‘guest’ shows a complete breakdown in oversight, accountability and basic safety protocols.”
– MLA Claire Rattée, Critic for Mental Health, Addictions and Housing Supports
VICTORIA, B.C.: Conservatives are demanding immediate accountability after an accused killer, wanted Canada-wide, was found residing in taxpayer-funded single-room occupancy (SRO) supportive housing in the Granville area of Vancouver.
“This is a damning public safety failure from the NDP,” said MLA Macklin McCall, Conservative Critic for Public Safety. “A government-managed and taxpayer-funded SRO building allowed an accused killer to live among vulnerable residents.
“The province is the landlord of this building and are responsible for conducting checks and due diligence to properly vet residents. This responsibility was blatantly ignored. Once again, the NDP failed on public safety, unnecessarily exposing British Columbians to serious potential risks.”
MLA Claire Rattée, Conservative Critic for Mental Health, Addictions and Housing Supports, argues the incident exposes deep flaws in how the NDP manage supportive housing: “Supportive housing should protect vulnerable people and surrounding communities, not put them in danger.
“Allowing an accused killer to reside in government supportive housing as a so-called ‘guest’ shows a complete breakdown in oversight, accountability and basic safety protocols. The NDP must explain why they continue this destructive agenda despite an abundance of evidence proving supportive housing, as currently structured, simply does not work.”
Conservatives note the NDP response raises concerns, particularly given a prior government commitment to conduct a review and implement changes to the supportive housing model.
