VICTORIA, B.C.: Today, Kiel Giddens, MLA for Prince George-Mackenzie and Critic for Labour, and Misty Van Popta, MLA for Langley-Walnut Grove and Critic for Infrastructure and Construction, responded to the NDP government’s announcement on expanding presumptive cancer coverage for firefighters under the Workers Compensation Act.
The NDP announced that eight additional cancers will be added to the list of occupational diseases presumed to be linked to firefighters’ work.
“Recognizing additional cancers is an important step,” said Giddens. “But firefighters and their families deserve certainty and full protection, not partial measures. We must ensure all occupational cancers are covered and that preventative screening and mental health supports are built into law.”
Van Popta echoed the call for a more comprehensive approach which is emphasized in her private member’s bill.
“Firefighters put their lives on the line every single day for our communities,” said Van Popta. “My private member’s bill, Bill M-214 – the Firefighters’ Health Act – was introduced to strengthen preventative health care, improve mental health supports, and ensure firefighters receive comprehensive coverage for the illnesses they face as a result of their service.”
Giddens and Van Popta are calling on the NDP to follow through on their 2024 provincial election commitment to expand presumptive Workers’ Compensation Board coverage for firefighters to include all cancer types classified as Group 1 carcinogens.
“Conservatives reiterated this week to firefighters that we will continue to pressure the NDP Government until all cancer types are included and the minimum years of service required to qualify for presumptive coverage is 2 years.” said Giddens. “Firefighters put their health and safety on the line, and keep their promises to keep our communities safe. We should keep our promises in return.”
