VICTORIA, B.C.: Today, NDP members voted to block Conservative Bill M-219, attempting to obfuscate their government’s deadly waitlist crisis and restrict patients from making informed decisions.

Despite revelations 4,620 British Columbians died on waitlists from 2024–25 and over 1.2 million are waiting to see specialists, this government once again chose secrecy over transparency at the expense of patient choice.

Statement from Dr. Anna Kindy, Conservative MLA North Island, Critic for Health:

“Every year, thousands more British Columbians die on healthcare waitlists under the NDP. Today they chose to hide this fact. By voting against Bill M-219, the NDP blocked legislation that would have told patients the real expected wait time, the safe medical timeline, and their options when treatment can’t be delivered in time.

“Families are losing loved ones because this government is hiding real wait times. Patients deserve honest information so they can make life-saving decisions before it’s too late. Behind every statistic are frightened patients and devastated families.

“With 4,620 deaths in a single year, blocking transparency is clear negligence. British Columbians deserve better than a government that hides the truth to protect itself.”
