Statement by Jobs Critic Gavin Dew on Canadian Federation of Independent Business September 2025 Business Barometer

KELOWNA, B.C.: “Small business confidence in B.C. has collapsed – it’s the lowest in Canada and sliding further into pessimism. The numbers don’t lie: job creators see things getting worse, not better, 8 years into an NDP government.

“The warning signs are everywhere. Nearly one in five employers is preparing layoffs, while only a handful are looking to hire. More than half of businesses say demand has dried up, and taxes, insurance, and rising wage costs are crushing them.”

“Most alarming, a record 36 per cent of small businesses say they can’t afford to invest in the basic equipment and technology they need to compete. We are in a growing economic malaise – you can see it in the eyes of business operators, despite their drive to keep calm and carry on.”

“Business confidence is at rock bottom because the BC NDP has made it more expensive and more complicated to employ people, grow a business, and invest in B.C.’s future. They have replaced a culture of optimism and entrepreneurship with uncertainty, instability, and pessimism. Instead of delivering dad jokes written by taxpayer-funded comedian friends, Premier Eby should be focused on delivering conditions for investment and opportunity.

“Our business community is on its knees, practically begging for change. The Conservatives will restore hope for a brighter future.”
