“Over 230 students rely on this bus every day for a safe eleven-kilometre roundtrip journey over the Queensborough Bridge to school. Abruptly ending the service forces parents and students into a difficult and unfair situation.”
– Steve Kooner, MLA for Richmond-Queensborough
VICTORIA, B.C.: Conservative MLA Steve Kooner, Richmond–Queensborough, read his petition on the Queensborough School Bus in the Legislative Assembly.
The petition, signed by over 1,000 residents, demands the NDP government reverse their plan to cancel the school bus service to New Westminster Secondary School.
This summer, families were informed this will be the “final year” of the program — contradictory to an NDP campaign promise to make the bus permanent and free, and assurances from NDP Education Minister Lisa Beare during Estimates Debates in April 2025 that a solution was being secured with the School District and TransLink.
Despite the Minister’s claims, the School Board is unaware of any talks with TransLink.
“The Queensborough School Bus Service must continue beyond June 2026,” said MLA Kooner. “Over 230 students rely on this bus every day for a safe eleven-kilometre roundtrip journey over the Queensborough Bridge to school. Abruptly ending the service forces parents and students into a difficult and unfair situation.”
MLA Kooner previously wrote to Minister Beare urging her to honour the NDP government’s public commitments by extending the service beyond June 2026.
