MISSION, B.C.: MLA for Abbotsford–Mission Reann Gasper and Deputy Caucus Whip is raising serious concerns after learning the B.C. Ministry of Health has informed a Mission medical clinic that its population-based funding will be cancelled effective March 31, 2026, a decision the clinic says could leave nearly 1,900 local patients without a family doctor within months.

“This decision came out of nowhere, and the consequences for Mission patients are immediate and severe,” said Gasper. “We are already dealing with emergency room closures, limited access to mental health services, and chronic shortages of primary care. Now the NDP is pulling the rug out from under one of the few clinics that was actually working, and without regard for the people who will be left behind.”

Gasper is calling on the Minister of Health to immediately reverse the decision and engage with frontline providers to prevent further loss of care in Mission.

“Mission matters,” Gasper added. “And right now, the government’s actions suggest it doesn’t believe that.”

Critic for Health Dr. Anna Kindy said the decision reflects a broader pattern of instability in B.C.’s health-care system. While the Mission clinic is the only one affected locally, similar population-based funding cancellations across the province could leave tens of thousands of British Columbians without access to a family doctor.

“This is a pattern with the health ministry and health authorities, where top-down decision-making stifles innovation and ultimately reduces access to safe, reliable care for British Columbians. This is what happens when decisions are made without listening to doctors or communities,” said Kindy. “Population-based funding helped clinics retain providers and keep patients connected to care. Cancelling it puts patients at risk and adds more pressure to an already overwhelmed system facing staffing shortages.”
