GREEN LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK, B.C.: Our provincial parks and campgrounds are part of our shared natural heritage and belong to every British Columbian.
The time is now for the NDP to be transparent about why access to the Sunset View Campground at Green Lake Provincial Park was restricted from July 9th to July 14th, during the peak camping season.
When the NDP government restricts access to a publicly funded campground, British Columbians deserve more than silence and excuses. The NDP must explain who made this decision, why it was made and whether all British Columbians are being treated fairly.
“B.C. has some of the most magnificent parks and campgrounds in the world, and everyone deserve to be able to enjoy them, no matter their identity or background,” said Linda Hepner, Shadow Minister for Environment and Parks. “Given the worrying trend of the NDP restricting access to provincial parks based on Indigenous ancestry, British Columbians deserve an explanation for why this popular campground had been closed to the public. There must be room for Indigenous people to use parks for cultural events while keeping campgrounds open for everyone to enjoy.”
“The NDP needs to clear the air and explain what happened at Sunset View Campground,” said Lorne Doerkson, MLA for Cariboo-Chilcotin. “It is concerning to see a popular local campground unavailable to many British Columbians during the busiest time of the year.”
“A fundamental principle for the B.C. Conservatives is that all British Columbians are equal,” said Hon. Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Leader of the Conservative Party of B.C. “We will always stand firmly to ensure that campgrounds and provincial parks remain accessible to everyone, without preference based on identity. Our parks are our shared heritage.”
