FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

VICTORIA, B.C.: As students return to the classroom, parents want to feel confident that their children are receiving the education and support they need to succeed. Despite billions in education funding, academic outcomes remain a concern in too many schools across British Columbia.

According to the Fraser Institute’s Report Card on British Columbia Elementary Schools, just eight of B.C.’s 878 public elementary schools scored nine or better out of 10 for academic performance, and only one earned a perfect score. Far too many public schools scored less than one out of 10, raising serious questions about whether government investments are translating into better results for students.

MLA Lynne Block, Shadow Minister for Education, says families deserve a stronger focus on student achievement and classroom success.

“Parents care about whether their children are thriving academically and receiving the tools they need to succeed. Years of chronic underfunding have compounded challenges across the education system, including declining academic outcomes and persistent shortages of teachers and educational assistants. The NDP needs to focus less on how much it spends and more on delivering measurable results for students,” said Block.

Parents and students deserve an education system that prioritizes excellence, addresses staffing shortages, and ensures every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Hon. Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, said government must bring the focus back to what matters most: helping children succeed.

“When it comes to education, the NDP has lost sight of a basic responsibility of government: getting better results for kids. B.C. has no shortage of bright young people with big futures ahead of them. What they need is a school system that helps them get there,” said Findlay. “A B.C. Conservative government will put students first, get back to basics and make sure every education dollar is doing more to help our kids succeed.”
