VANCOUVER, BC — Yesterday, the BC NDP stood in front of Muslim families in Surrey and promised to help the Iqra Education Society build a new high school. Today, Patti Bacchus, the former chair of the Vancouver School Board, says NDP headquarters called her to clarify they “weren’t promising actual money.”

Both of those things cannot be true. Either David Eby made a real commitment to our community, or he made an empty gesture and his campaign is now quietly reassuring people like Patti Bacchus that nothing will come of it. Families in Surrey deserve to know which one it is.”

Parents who have sacrificed for years to give their children a faith-based education should never be used as props in the final week of a campaign. After nine years in government, the NDP had every chance to help these families. They waited until eight days before the vote, made a promise in Surrey, and walked it back in Vancouver the next morning.

David Eby needs to come clean today. Who is telling the truth, his campaign headquarters or his candidate? Surrey families deserve a straight answer before they vote.
