VANCOUVER, B.C. — Claire Rattée, BC Conservative candidate for Skeena, issued the following statement on behalf of the Conservative Party of BC on the final investment decision for LNG Canada Phase 2:
“British Columbia needs many more announcements like today’s final investment decision on LNG Canada Phase 2, not just one expansion after too many years.
“LNG Canada has already shown what major resource development can deliver. It has created thousands of good-paying jobs, brought billions of dollars in investment, opened opportunities for local businesses and built significant economic partnerships with First Nations.
“Under the NDP, most LNG projects once proposed in this province either stalled or were abandoned under the weight of red tape and uncertain permitting. Meanwhile, the United States built export capacity of more than 120 million tonnes per annum, and Qatar is expanding to between 70 and 80 million. The BC NDP have left our province poorer.
“Of the more than 20 projects proposed from the mid-2000s, only one is operational today. This is because the NDP have an ideological disposition against BC LNG, even though it is the cleanest in the world. This was clear when Deputy Premier Nikki Sharma called BC gas development “a race to the bottom.”
Only the Conservative Party of BC have a clear plan to double LNG production by 2032, and triple it by 2035. The BC Energy Superpower Plan will get British Columbia building again, creating good-paying jobs and generating new revenue for the services British Columbians deserve.
The BC Energy Superpower Plan will:
- More than double natural gas production by 2032 and more than triple it by 2035;
- Designate the liquid-rich Montney Formation as a strategic provincial asset;
- Pass a 120 Day Permitting Act for major projects;
- Harmonize BC’s permitting, approvals and consultation with the federal government’s Bill C-39, so that BC-led projects are approved within one year;
- Invite foreign investors to Vancouver and make the case that British Columbia is the better place for their capital.
- Work with the federal government to ensure B.C. gets credit for the global emissions reductions our low-carbon LNG delivers when it replaces coal and higher-emitting LNG in other countries.
“This is a strong plan for serious times with specific commitments. Only a Conservative government will treat energy as an urgent economic mission. Allies in Asia and Europe need reliable Canadian LNG, Northern B.C. is ready to deliver it, and British Columbians deserve a government that makes announcements like today’s the rule, not the exception.
