Lorne Doerkson commits to a 10-lane George Massey Bridge, completing the Surrey Hospital in Cloverdale, and a new Women and Children’s Hospital.
SURREY, B.C. — Conservative Party of BC Leader Lorne Doerkson announced today that a Conservative government will build a new 10-lane bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel, complete the new Surrey Hospital in Cloverdale, and build a new Women and Children’s Hospital in Surrey.
More than a decade ago, a previous BC government announced a plan to replace the George Massey Tunnel with a 10-lane bridge. When the NDP took office, they scrapped it. After nine years of the NDP, nothing has been built. Residents across the Lower Mainland spend hours every day stuck in traffic, hurting both their quality of life and the provincial economy.
A Conservative government will build the new 10-lane bridge, cutting commutes by up to 30 minutes and helping businesses move goods more efficiently.
“After nine years of David Eby and the NDP, British Columbia stopped building,” said Doerkson. “Families in the Lower Mainland are stuck in traffic every day because the NDP cancelled a bridge that should already be open. My government will build it, on time and on budget.”
Surrey’s population has doubled in the last 25 years, but the NDP has failed to keep up. Families can’t find a family doctor, referral wait times have reached record highs, and waits for surgeries, MRIs and CT scans have doubled. The new Surrey Hospital in Cloverdale was supposed to open next year at a cost of $1.7 billion. It is now delayed until 2030 and will cost more than a billion dollars more than promised.
A Conservative government will complete the Surrey Hospital in Cloverdale on time and on budget, and will build a new Women and Children’s Hospital in Surrey, so families no longer have to travel an hour or more into Vancouver for care.
“David Eby is good at making announcements and very bad at finishing projects,” said Doerkson. “A new bridge, a finished hospital in Cloverdale and a new hospital for women and children in Surrey: these are the projects this region has been waiting for. These are serious times, and they call for strong leadership. Let’s end the NDP’s lost decade and get this province building again.”
