VANCOUVER, B.C. — Premier David Eby today confirmed that he and his physician wife benefit from subsidized $10-a-day child care, which the vast majority of British Columbian parents, including low-income families, are unable to access.

REPORTER: The question is, has your family ever benefited from a $10 a day child care program? And if so, can you clarify when and how?
EBY: Yes. The YMCA that I don’t want to reveal where my kids go to daycare. But yes, the YMCA is one of our partners in $10-a-day. And my family has. Yes.
REPORTER: So some New Democrats are upset you won’t commit to a universal $10-a-day strategy as promised by your predecessor. How do you think just the optics of that and how people would feel knowing that you benefit from a program that very few people have access to and one that you won’t expand?
“It’s shocking to learn that while hundreds of thousands of British Columbians are struggling with the most expensive child care in the country, David Eby’s family landed a plum $10-a-day child care spot,” said Margareta Dovgal, Conservative Party of BC candidate for Vancouver-Yaletown.
As Premier, David Eby earns over $227,000 per year, and Eby’s wife is a practicing medical doctor. It is completely conceivable that Eby’s household income exceeds half a million dollars per year. According to childcare experts, $10-a-day child care accounts for just 10% of child care spots in the province, with many parents being unable to secure a spot.
“Nobody begrudges David Eby and his wife for their success. The Conservative Party of BC wants more British Columbians to succeed. What families will not accept is a Premier who promised them $10-a-day child care, failed to deliver it, and then took one of the scarce spots for himself while a single mom working two jobs sits on a waitlist,” said Dovgal.
“David Eby looks after David Eby first. Parents struggling to afford child care deserve a Premier who fixes the problem instead of one who works the system for his own family.”
