WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C.: Lorne Doerkson, MLA for Cariboo-Chilcotin, is calling on the Premier and the Minister of Forests to immediately declare a local state of emergency in the South Cariboo as wildfires continue to grow rapidly and threaten our communities.
The situation is becoming increasingly serious, with one wildfire growing by more than 17,000 hectares in just 24 hours. With strong winds expected this weekend, there are growing concerns these fires could spread rapidly and threaten communities and firefighters.
“I am deeply concerned that current resources may no longer be keeping pace with these rapidly growing fires,” said Doerkson. “Residents across the South Cariboo are extremely worried as these fires continue to grow, and with challenging weather expected this weekend, we need more resources on the ground now to protect homes, businesses, ranches, critical infrastructure, and the people who call this region home. Residents must also be assured that the 100 Mile District General Hospital, which has experienced several ER closures in recent weeks, will remain open during this critical time.”
Doerkson says the situation requires the Province to take extraordinary action and immediately increase the resources available to the South Cariboo.
“I am calling on Premier Eby and the Minister of Forests to declare a local state of emergency and deploy every available resource to the South Cariboo immediately to protect lives, communities, and the firefighters on the front lines,” said Doerkson.
Hon. Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Leader of the Conservative Party of B.C., echoed MLA Doerkson’s concern.
“Lorne Doerkson is right to be calling for a state of emergency in the South Cariboo, and I stand firmly with him and with the residents who are facing this growing crisis,” said Findlay. “This is a time for action. Premier Eby and his government must declare a state of emergency and immediately bring additional resources into the South Cariboo.”
