VANCOUVER, B.C. – David Eby now says he’ll “never roll over” for Donald Trump. So, where has he been?

The United States has imposed duties on Canadian softwood lumber since 2017, hitting major B.C. producers, and put tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum in 2018.

The NDP’s response? Fight the Trans Mountain expansion, a project expected to support thousands of B.C. jobs and B.C.’s steelworkers. And when BC Ferries handed the contract for four new major vessels to a Chinese state-owned shipyard, Eby refused to step in.

Now, with an election underway, he’s promising to “buy B.C.”

His first example is the North Coast Transmission Line, which broke ground on September 3 and is expected to employ up to 1,400 workers at peak construction. But on that same day, BC Hydro said it was already buying Canadian wherever it could. Eby’s “new rule” is a slogan attached to a project that was already doing it.

“Standing up to Donald Trump comes from taking real action, not press releases,” said Conservative Party of BC Leader Lorne Doerkson. “You don’t stop a bully with tough talk three weeks before an election. You stop a bully by being strong enough that you don’t need him. The NDP had nine years to make B.C. that strong, and B.C. families are still waiting. They need real action, not retread announcements that won’t make the changes they need. British Columbians should judge governments by what they deliver, not what they announce.
