COQUITLAM, B.C. — Conservative Party of BC leader Lorne Doerkson announced his government will reverse the NDP’s changes to the property-tax deferment program, so seniors can stay in their homes and remain in the communities they helped build, as part of a broader plan to fix seniors’ care across British Columbia.

Doerkson also vowed to build more long-term-care beds by cutting the unnecessary design rules that have driven up costs, delivering affordable, high-quality facilities faster. Seniors waiting for a bed will receive portable public funding, giving them and their families a real choice among qualified providers.

For seniors who want to stay in their own homes, Doerkson will implement the BC Seniors Advocate’s recommendation to expand consumer-directed, publicly funded home care. Conservatives will also grow HandyDART where demand is greatest, provide free shingles vaccination and help seniors on low, fixed incomes afford hearing aids. It will crack down on those who prey on seniors through abuse and fraud, with tougher penalties to match.

“Seniors spent their lives building British Columbia, and they have earned the right to stay in their homes and get the care they need close to the people they love,” said Doerkson. “My government will make sure every senior in this province can age with dignity, security and independence.”

After nine years of the NDP, seniors are paying more in taxes and waiting longer for the care they have earned. David Eby’s Budget 2026 raised income taxes on every British Columbian, changed the property-tax deferment program, so seniors risk being taxed out of their homes, and shelved seven long-term-care projects while 7,200 people wait for a bed. Seniors built this province, and they deserve better than a government that takes more and delivers less.

“David Eby has taxed seniors out of their homes and left thousands waiting for care his government refuses to build. It is time for change, and my Conservative government will build a British Columbia where every senior can live with the dignity and security they have earned.”
